Well this post is long overdue. As I had previously mentioned here we’ve been quite busy preparing and now settling into our temporary life in Poland. Are we Polish? Nope. I hail from an Italian background and my wife is from a British background. Too be honest with you, before we knew we were coming here, we could barely point to Poland on the map, let alone Warsaw where we’re going to be living. We knew nothing about the country. Why are we here you ask? Well here’s the Coles notes. My day job has me flying as an airline pilot. My company has strategic European partner airlines. People in North American generally travel more in the winter, and Europeans generally travel more in the summer. So instead of having to hire a whole whack load of pilots for the busy season and then be forced to lay them off in the slower months each airline in this partnership shares pilot’s to keep everyone employed year round. We call these “deployments” and they can last anywhere from 30 days to 6 months. You basically just go fly the exact same airplane for the other company for “x” amount of time. Usually it’s on a volunteer basis but it has occasionally been forced to mitigate layoff’s. You’re normally provided with a car, apartment and a little extra spending money to offset the increase in cost of living.
It’s actually a fantastic experience. My wife (girlfriend at the time) were in Dublin, Ireland for 3 months in 2012. We’ve taken a few years off but since my wife is on maternity leave at the moment, we decided to pack up the family station wagon and go on an adventure to Poland for 5 months. We’re here until the end of October. It’s going to be very interesting living in a non english speaking country with an infant son, dog and two active and adventurous parent’s. We’ll be sure to keep everyone updated on our experiences, adventures and most importantly our quest to continue staying healthy and fit.
Keep the blue side up.
