Well we’re smack dab in the middle of fall. The air is cool and crisp, the leaves are a festival of different colors and the smell of pumpkin spiced everything is in the air. What better way to take in the fall season then to get outside and enjoy it with the people you love. Before winter hits and we’re all bundled up like the Michelin man here are some fall outdoor activities to get you and your family moving:
Hit The Trails
Grab your partner, your kids, your dog, whoever and go. There’s nothing healthier physically and mentally then hitting the outdoors and soaking in the fall beauty. Depending on where in the world you live this is the perfect time to hit the trails. The trails shouldn’t be too muddy yet and the scenery will be absolutely beautiful with the multi coloured leaves.
Pick Some Apples
Head down to your local apple orchard and pick some apples. Walking up and down the orchards will give you plenty of exercise. It’s also going to help you avoid feeling guilty after gorging on the sugary apple treats you’ll soon be eating when you’re done. This idea works two folds. Once you leave with your stock pile of apples, it will give you something to do in the future on rainy days like baking apple pies, muffins or ‘special’ apple cider for the big kids (ie. mom and dad).
Even a Navy SEAL can’t deny the cuteness factor of watching a bunch of chubby toddlers stumbling around a pumpkin patch holding miniature pumpkins. From wagon rides to face painting to petting zoo’s, there’s bound to be something for every age at your local pumpkin patch. And what could be cooler than carving a pumpkin with your kids that you actually picked?
Really in Fall? The weather might be getting chillier but winter isn’t here yet. If you pack just right fall is the perfect time to go camping with friends and family. If you have a kayak or canoe even better. I’ve done some fall camping and kayaking and it’s by far my favourite time of year to do it. Besides my wife (you hear that darling?) there’s nothing more beautiful than watching the sunrise/sunset on a glassy water lake, with the multi coloured fall leaves as your back drop.
Play Some Sunday Backyard Sports
Whether it be throwing around the pig skin with a bunch of your buddies, frisbee with your partner or playing catch with your kids. After a giant Sunday meal head outside and burn off some of those calories. Every thanksgiving we have a traditional backyard football game . It’s something I’ll always remember as a child and still look forward to every year.
Rake Some leaves
Okay before you call bullshit hear me out. Not only does this serve as a good form of exercise but it can be fun too. I think everyone has at least one memory of rolling around in the leaves. Grab your spouse or your kids and get them to help. Make teams. Whoever builds the biggest pile wins and gets to jump in the other’s. Or if you’ve already piled yours and you don’t like your neighbours, go jump in theirs…….when they’re not home of course! Also be sure to wear a pair of brown cords and a red wool sweater to really look like a fall catalogue model.
That’s All She Wrote
Before you know it winter will be here. Get out and enjoy the weather before we’re forced to lug around our Sorel’s and parka’s. Whatever you decide to do enjoy it and do it with the people you love.
P.S. Credit where credit is due. My wife came up with a few of these. Before she put her 2 cents into this article I only had play sports and drink beer. Jesus way to get the priorities right woman!
Anyone else have any fun ideas to do this fall? Comments are always encouraged.
Keep the blue side up.
