I don’t have a formal background in diet and nutrition. I don’t have fancy letters behind my name either. I did loose a 100 lbs once and I like to think of myself as a lifelong learner. The more I learn about diet and nutrition, the more I realize we have no idea what we are actually eating, nor do we give a shit either. I think I can safely say we’ve become a society that allows marketing and price to determine what we eat and who we trust.
Navigating the grocery store can be a nightmare. I mean you have every product and brand pulling you in all different directions. These grocery bastards have grocery shopping down to a science. Everything from the music in the store to the placement of products is specifically calculated to get you to do one thing…….BUY!
The BEST Nutrition Advice I Ever Heard.
Shop The Perimeter!
Plain and simple. As a general rule the healthiest and freshest foods are almost always located on the perimeter of the grocery store. No really think about it…….
Real food is exactly that real food. Hunted, grown from the ground, picked from a tree or fetched from the sea. Real food is not processed, refined, or preserved. It has very few ingredients or better yet, doesn’t need to list ingredients because it is what it is (ie. an apple or a steak.) Real food has not been genetically modified like a lot of the corn, wheat, and beans grown today. Also real food isn’t laced with ingredients that you need a bio chemistry degree to pronounce. Real food is just the stuff that the big guy put on this earth for us to eat before scientists started juicing and f@cking it all up.
Real food is also quite perishable. That’s why you always find it on the perimeter of the grocery stores in fridges or freezers. Perishable foods can’t be preserved for long periods of time (except frozen fruits and veggies.) Oreo’s and things like cereal last decades vs. a banana that last just days.
North American’s, and even certain parts of Asia and Europe are getting fatter and fatter every year. A lot of the things we consume nowadays come in wrappers and have preservatives added to them. Call me crazy but there might just be a connection here. Anything that needs to be preserved usually has preservatives in them. That’s not natural.
It’s taken me a while but I’ve finally got it. I learned nutrition is actually relatively simple: EAT REAL FOOD. We just have to re-learn how to eat what is truly healthy. The benefits I noticed when giving up processed foods like wheat, and upping my intake of real foods were almost immediate. Give her a try. For a whole week try to eat only foods found on the perimeter of the grocery store. I bet you’ll notice a huge difference.
